Bathroom Lighting Ideas for your Home
Bathrooms have always been a functional space; however, in recent years it has become an opportunity for home owners alike to create a calm relaxing area in the home.
Long gone are the days of colourful bathrooms, those pink toilets and green basins are thankfully a thing of the past. We often see modern bathrooms using a lot of neutral tones and bringing some colour into the room through smaller detailing & accessories.
Lighting is one of those things that can bring a space together, providing a practical & safe solution for all your everyday tasks while still creating a luxurious space in your home.
Zones & IP Rating
Before we dive straight in with the various styles of lighting available, it is so important to ensure the light is safe to use as not all lights are suitable for the Bathroom.
It is recommended to have an IP Rating of 44 or above, meaning the light is protected against solid objects and can withstand splashes of water. You may be familiar with or have heard about bathroom zones which categorise the recommended IP rating for certain areas within the bathroom, essentially protecting the light against moisture & dirt.
- Zone 0 – IP67 – The Interior of the bath tub or shower basin
- Zone 1 – IP65 – Area immediately above the bath or shower tray
- Zone 2 – IP44 – Within 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath/shower

Ceiling
There are several variations you could choose from. One being recessed downlights, also known as spotlights. This is still a hugely popular choice especially for new builds and homes with low or standard height ceilings. It’s one of those lighting styles that is sleek, won’t outdate and is efficient for positioning light in the desired location around the room. The Icage downlight remains a very popular choice for people opting for this style of lighting.
Another bathroom lighting idea for the ceiling is a flush or semi flush fitting, which is often seen in a W/C or smaller bathrooms as there tends to be only one lighting point in the ceiling. Flush Fittings such as the Delphi in Black is a modern & minimalist design. Or the Satin Brass Andy Semi Flush below is a popular option for standard height ceilings.
For homes with a higher ceiling there is the option of pendants like the new Tamara from där lighting with its clear globe shade helping to generate lots of light. Or if you want to really splash out & create a hotel vibe in your own home, the Vela Crystal chandeliers could be the perfect focal point for the room.

Wall
Wall lights are typically found beside the mirror for both style & practical reasons. They can be positioned above a mirror in the form of a bar or placed at either side of the mirror at eye level to help illuminate your face.
The black Chai Light below is a charming example of the light above the mirror, it has a pull cord at your convenience meaning you can save money on the electrical bill. Black fittings & features are making a statement for Bathroom Trends in 2023.
Another popular style in bathrooms recently is Brass & Gold tones. The Brass Talo’s has a rich & sleek look when the lights are positioned at either said of the mirror. Having this type of extra lighting can help make the space feel bigger & brighter.
For a Vanity Style, the Laura Ashley Prague light is modern & timeless in its polished chrome finish & textured clear glass. It’s even versatile in that it can also be used as a ceiling light.
As the images show, light fittings can coordinate with the décor of the room. So why not create a tranquil space in your home, somewhere that helps you to energise in the morning & relax in the evening
