View your Room in a New Light

While many trends come and go everyone has their own unique style when decorating their home. Lighting is a perfect way to showcase and express your personality throughout your home.

In particular adding a table lamp to any space can not only complement the main light source but brighten up those dark corners and transform them into cosy inviting rooms. All you have to do is plug it in.

We’ve chosen our favourite table lamps from the wide selection we offer in the hope to inspire you to develop your space with colour and function.

When picking table lamps, we normally think about the following five key areas;

L – Length

A – Activity

M – Matching

P – Personality

S – Shades

Length

There are two main things that need to be considered when choosing the length of your new lamp; the room size and surface space of the table.

Smaller lamps can often be found on a console table as it presents a warm and welcoming feeling to your home while still leaving plenty of space for other items such as your telephone or flowers. It is a similar situation for bedside lamps as they tend to can have small surface areas while still requiring a lot of function. Therefore, smaller table lamps would be more appropriate for that area.

In large open planned spaces, the length of the table lamp can be much greater in size. They are suited to the room but yet in the evenings form a cosy and homely area when lit.

The Dayna & Bexton show examples of how the different lengths of lamps suit various areas.

Activity

Lighting is positioned around our home to help us carry out everyday activities with each one serving its own purpose. In addition to this, table lamps offer support in areas such as the study or office as it directs light, making it comfortable to complete the required work.

When buying a task lamp in this area there a few things to look out for. Check if the head is adjustable and whether it offers different dimming levels. These small details can help prevent eyestrain allowing you to keep your mind focused on the task at hand.

Something else that has recently become a trend to table lamps, having a built in USB Port.  With technology getting so advanced our phone batteries are often running low after so much use throughout the day.

Being able to charge your device while lighting up your space is a real luxury and rather convenient. Whether you use this lamp for a bedside table, in the living room or office the choice is yours.

Matching

When decorating our homes or getting dressed in the morning, we think about the colour, style and materials or texture that we want to achieve.  We pick items that match and work well together, they can be of similar pattern or colour pallet.

Sometimes when we decorate or design our rooms, we like it to be symmetrical.  For example, in a living area, having two sofas facing each other with tables and lamps at either side. By adding the second lamp into the room it can create balance as your eyes are drawn straight to that area. Matching items is very common, visually appealing and brings a sense of relaxation and calmness to the room.

Personality

Through the use of colours, decorations and styling of accessories your home is a reflection on who you are. It displays everything about your personality whether you like traditional, simple clean-cut designs, vibrant colours or you like to treasure collectables from your family or traveling trips.

Your home tells a story about you and this should be evident when someone walks around your house.

Using an accessory such as a table lamp is a great way to inject something that represents your individuality and contributes to the beauty of the room.

Shades

When picking a lamp shade there is more to it than what meets the eye. Not all table lamps are complete with a shade so it’s important to think about where the lamp will be situated and the size of the base.

Usually if the base is short in height or width then a smaller shade is recommended whereas a taller shade would be suited for a large base. For example, if the surface area of a bedside table was limited, a large shade on a small table lamp would only restrict the space and therefore wouldn’t be functional.

Matching the shape of the lamp base to the lamp shade is another aspect to be considered. A round or drum shade compliments a round base perfectly because they fit well together and add balance to the room.

Adding a shade to a table lamp isn’t just for decoration, it protects the eye from the bulbs glare as it softens the glow rather than experiencing the direct light. There are lots of shades to choose from, some have plates, some are smooth and some have pattern, no matter what way you style the room don’t be afraid to have a little fun.

This simple Zhamo table lamp is a perfect example of how changing the shade can add a different dynamic to your room, you can change the shade to suit the styling and colour theme of the room.
